We can be heroes, Just for one day!

I’ve seen loads of movies and the protagonist or the male lead ( I thought of it and I couldn’t get my mind around calling a guy who is unemployed at late 20’s, living off his parents’ money whose only job is to roam around in bikes, get drunk and woo the girl and eventually marry her, as a “hero”, he’s just a male lead IMO ) is shown to do some amazing things in the span of three hours maximum. Super heroes aside, normal guys are shown doing some amazing things. Its always a normal next door guy character who does it mostly, I wonder if he can do it, why cant I? It got me thinking, which essentially means, in the last few days, all the times I blacked out from a on going conversation with anyone, I was thinking of this and yes, I found out the reason. Background music!

I mean, think about it. It makes perfect sense. Imagine you get a BGM in your head everytime you wanted to do something good. You get a romantic song when you see someone attractive, you get a inspirational music in your head when you are set to do something, a song or a bit of music that knows what you are going to do and multiplies the feeling, you ‘ll do it just for the heck of it. A whole stadium shouting your name when you are on the field, now you see what a home advantage is for a match, why Sachin plays well on the field, BGM, in this case, the sound of the crowd ( yeah, talent is there but you need a push right? )

If you’ve noticed properly, BGM is more of a cue to what you have to do next. Imagine, how easy it would be that when you see something and turn and a music plays on the back of your head telling you what is expected ( heroic/romantic/runaway/smile ). How easy the decision making will be and ..and..the feel good factor when you hear a music when you achieved something. Feels like heaven, isn’t it? Andy Dufresne once said we all have music in our heart and we don’t need a music player. He had one thing in mind in Shawshank and all he needed was one single piece of music to push him. In real life, I have to face too many situations and I have too many different kinds of music in my head, by the time I choose what I want to play in my head, the feeling would have crossed the border. Oh, evolution, why didn’t you get this thing wired into humans?

Ps. I was listening to the abridged version of “The Thieving Magpie from The Clockwork Orange soundtrack” in loop while writing this. A feel good factor when the music peaked when I finished typing.

Stick No Bills!

This idea struck me when I was watching the late George Carlin’s routine about bumper stickers. It was well thought out like each of his stand-ups and got me thinking, is this the same case in Indian roads? That’s when I started observing and this is a rant of what I’ve seen so far. Its more of my own thoughts when I see a sticker on a vehicle. For certain reasons I’m leaving out the owner names and god references stuck on vehicles. No making fun of it (lips sealed)

The biggest thing I <insert angry feeling here> was the “Don’t kiss me” stuck on the tail light of the bikes. I mean, how could you do that? the minute I saw the bike, I wanted to kiss it and take it on a date that night! Don’t do this man!! 😛 Seriously, when did bumping into another vehicle become kiss? If thats what the owner thinks and if the bike is compared to a human being, then is the bumping bike really kissing the..yeah, the same thing what you think. Yuck!

There was an Apache with “my mom’s gift” stuck on the sides. I stopped near it and looked at the bike. It made me instantly happy how clean the bike was manitained and I felt a bit of a respect towards the biker. Everytime I see a bike with “dad’s gift” or “mom’s gift” stuck on it, the first thing that strikes my mind is that, the owner isn’t earning enough to buy himself the bike or he’s earning and still his parents have bought him the gift with their money and he’s proud to show it off with the sticker, either way, he should maintain the bike with care atleast if he understands what the sticker says ( him, his and he’s because I’ve never seen this on a bike driver by a girl, maybe I should observe more, I meant the bike). If the same bike looked ill maintained inspite of being new and everything, I’d have surely thought “Shame on you Mr.Owner, you’ve let a random stranger on the streets down” ( not that I matter in anyway but still..)

I’ve read a story about a lion being brought up with sheeps. It was around sheeps for so long that it thought itself as one of them and never quite got to the fact that it was a lion even after being left in the jungle. This exact story crossed my mind when I saw a guy on a pulsar 150 with a sticker “220” on its sides. If this thing really works, I’m buying myself one.

..forgot to remember a few stickers with spelling errors that gave a whole other meaning. More to follow sometime soon, afterall, all it takes is a look around!

Keeping myself occupied with things like these makes traffic more interesting. Hope life throws more humor around me to keep me entertained.

Is that all we got?

I was one of the few people who came to the internet fairly late in their life. It was only around my college time my parents bought me a PC and internet was somewhere around 2nd year of college. Before that, there was a time when I used to rely on newspapers and magazines for in-depth analysis of any news ( TV news is not the same as they start repeating the same and most TV channels were biased like the Congress News Network or the other Tamil channels which had the party branding all over it ). Then came the internet and with it came latest news at your desktop as and when it happens. Tech blogs, video blogs, live coverage, and what not. It wasn’t the latest stuff or the inside the war zone tweets by journalists made me move online for all my news, it wasn’t even half of what i wanted. I read online news for a single huge reason, “comments”.

If you see me browsing, I spend more time in the comments than the actual post. Yeah, I read the post and everything but the true value lies in the comments. This is what I love about tech blogs, you read an article about a certain new development or a new company Microsoft is planning to sue for patent infringement, there is a whole another level of discussion going on about it. You can find out the past of it and also from people on either sides of the wall. Yes,there are trolls, a huge load of them. So much, that they can start a country of their own on the internet which was a bit, um..stupid but still the comment threads were always informative, sometimes more than the actual post! Reddit has a brilliant way to reduce trolling with the up-voting system and user pushed content which are relevant to the discussion. Why am I speaking about this? ( I don’t really know, I just thought its been long and a new post is due for a while now ) well, I see all this content driven discussions and I see the most favorite discussion forum for Indian youth, “Facebook” and what do i see?

Youre cute………………can i be ur frend?
Dei you dunno anything, vijay is mass!!
Thala rocks!!~!!!!!!!!!
ver nice photo!!
rarest picture of hero/heroine/cricketer/myarse
pls share this if you love your dad/mom/puppy/nextdoorneighbour/country/lover/ex-lover/future-lover/myarse
Pics of girls drinking/smoking and comments on how much girls are spoilt and why they suck!..

and the language used is just WOW.. I always wonder how a guy/girl who can swear this good in their comments go wrong with their grammar 😛 ( I don’t say my grammar is top drawer stuff but I had better grammar in class ten than what they have now ) The only sites I see more comments are “bikeadvice.in” and um,this other site where um..oh, no, this news site where.. oh, never mind. I see comments only if there is a picture of a celebrity or a girl! ( when a major newspapers’ top news is about bollywood cleavage and Sunny’s first look in Jism ( TOI today ), you can’t really expect much of people reading it #facepalm )

I know there is a place called real life where people “talk” to each other about things. But is it too much to ask the online community of India to be more than just a troll? I mean, how bad is it gonna make you feel if you type some honest opinions and participate in healthy discussions which not just clears your mind but also helps others who read it if they have the same doubt? The present situation is the same as elections, where the so called “well-educated” stay at home and enjoy the leave while others vote for the party they had liked from their childhood for the party principles which the party themselves have forgotten for years now! Is that all we got? The status of a troll?

Note: If you know a site where there are healthy discussion of anything Indian, feel free to post it in the comments.

My expectations of the end of the world ( IF it happens)

People say expectations hurt, well, this one of mine is sure gonna hurt, literally. January 1, 2012 was supposed to be just another new year’s day, except it wasn’t. As a kid, i was told too much about the mayan calendar and the end of the world (thank you discovery channel specials) that the start of this year had me all hyped up. In the relatively short time i had lived on this planet, I have never seen a major event worthy of being spoken for decades to come. No world wars, no nuclear bombings, no second coming of any god and not even an ice age ( death of Steve jobs doesn’t count :( ) Having watched so many movies about the end of the world has raised my expectations for 21 December, 2012. I know the end of the world is not something to made fun of but then if its gonna happen, its gonna happen and if all we can do is sit and watch, then i wanna watch something truly spectacular. Here is a small list of expectations and questions i have about this so called apocalypse.

There is this one question which i couldn’t get my mind off. Most people are pretty sure that the Mayan calendar dont have a date after 21.12, and i dont question that. But what of the time zone? if its CST, then we in India get to see the dawn of 21.12? or if its gonna happen according to the timezone and slowly move across the planet, then will we get to see it happening live in Australia and NewZeland in our news channels? (imagine the ad revenues they can get of it :O oh, yeah, they wont be alive in a few hours time, never mind) if its the latter, then by the time it reaches the far end of the planet, it would have got over in australia and we can move around the world back home and live happily ever after 😛

But how is it gonna happen? how many are gonna survive at the end of it? Will we have heroes and the important question of all, will we get to see zombies? ( oh, how much i want that to happen 😛 ) even if there will be survivors, i dont know if i wanna be one, it still depends on who all survives, will be big time boring if the only survivors are a bunch of scientists locked up in a lab researching about why this happened and what did they miss!!

Expectations in the order of increasing possibility:
1. Alien invasion ( that’d be cool, we get to fight and dont have to worry about humanity if we kill some of them on a hand combat )
2. God comes and says “Let there be darkness” or something like that and we all drop dead ( no fun but at least we will get to know if there is someone up there watching everything and most people will accept this happily cuz its god’s will )
3. God is an alien who comes and switches off light ( this would solve the age old dispute between science and religion and all will die knowing they were right all along )
4. WW3 breaks out and all hell breaks loose ( there will be peace at some point of time and a lot more survivors than the above 3 situations )
5. Major floods or ice age or something where nature turns against life for abusing it ( a real possibility with the rate we are destroying nature ) (heard somewhere they are creating a vegetarian version of Noah’s ark with all the seeds ready to start a new civilisation, hope they take the nature a bit more seriously then )
6. Nothing happens, not even a global holiday and we go to work ( see? this sounds boring now 😛 )

Cool things to do if you survive:
1. Throw stones at glass buildings if they are not broken yet and see the crash ( we all wanted to do that at some point )
2. Drive a car around like you are playing Grand Theft Auto or Need for Speed ( if the car is in shape, roads cant get any worse than what they are now)
3. Get back to your hobbies you wanted to do all your life if only you had a world without a busy job and Facebook.
4. There is a world out there for you to have fun and you dont have to live to impress people people or earn money. All you will have to do is survive.

Cool things to do if you dont survive:
1. umm..
2. there is this thing like..
3. there isn’t many things you can do, forget it.. live a good life before that and you wont regret it..

People i expect to go down (read dead ) in the chaos: ( i dont personally know most people in the below list and this is just a personal opinion. its not really nice to wish death upon people, but its for a bigger cause)
1. Justin Beiber (Yes please! in your list too right?)
2. A few tamil directors or movie directors in general ( if i am to survive, i deserve a better set of movies after the disaster, haven’t i had enough? )
3. Karunanidhi or in general politicians ( i leave this to the guy watching us from the sky or never mind, they will kill each other sooner anyways )
4. A lot more people without whom a world would be a better place. This is a perspective list and i will keep mine to myself.

People i expect to survive:
1. Well, its all or none. cuz everyone is important to  someone in this world.

Happy 2012 everyone :)
